Cary Brothers, an accomplished singer/songwriter releases his first official full-lenth. “Who You Are” is an album that features some old favorites and some excellent new work by Brothers. Starting with Jealousy, “Who You Are”, makes a pretty solid start. The melancholic and rich musical arrangement of the song mixes well with the strong lyrics and Brothers’ vocals are in top shape.
Ride is a strong song, which was recognized by peers in the music industry. Dutch dance DJ, DJ Tiësto, made this song in a huge dance hit in 2008. But the original song can stand on its own quite well. Cary Brothers makes good use of samples and his breathy vocals are perfect for this indie song.
Title track and single Who You Are has a good indie rock quality to it. The energetic and powerful drive of the song makes it a suitable single and Brothers’ strong vocals only add to this effect. Good songwriting and solid delivery. The beautiful ballad The Glass Parade is one of the album’s best songs. Great vocals and amazing arrangement. The gentle sentiment in the song is very present and makes it even better.
Honestly is the real gem on the album. Cary Brothers does everything right on this song. It suits him as a person and a musician. He embodies the music and spills his heart out in this beautiful and powerful ballad.
The uptempo The Last One has some influences from the indie scene again and would make a very good radio song. While it’s not my favorite it has a catchy ring and very interesting, danceable beat. The beautiful, intimate Loneliest Girl In The World has a distinct singer/songwriter quality that is very impressive and shows Cary Brothers in optima forma.
And also on If You Were Here, Cary Brothers excells. The song flows nicely and has a recognizable melody. Combined with the empathic, breathy vocals there is much to enjoy for the fans of the genre. Think Awhile is another, mainly acoustic, singer/songwriter song. And this suits Cary’s vocals so well that I just can’t get around it that these subtle, stripped-down songs are something he does best.
Brothers remains the gentleness and subtleness on All The Rage. His vocals thrive on these kind of songs and in the intimacy and personal connection that the song portrays, Brothers reaches remarkable heights. On the album closer Precious Lie, he’s accompanied by piano. The magical, elegant mood of the song is perfect for the lyrics and Cary’s passionate and honest delivery make this one of the very best songs on the album.
His Grammy-winning Blue Eyes is a bonus track on the album. I don’t think anyone can deny the strength of the arrangement and powerful delivery. This is a song that was worthy of a Grammy and I’ll leave it at that.
Many people know Cary Brothers’ music from numerous TV shows and soundtracks like “Garden State” but on “Who You Are”, Brothers shows that he is quite capable of filling an album with strong and solid songs. Cary Brothers is a valuable addition to the singer/songwriter scene.
