Out of all the Christmas songs ever released (and there are way too many of those in my opinion) there are only a handful that I actually enjoy. My favorite among those: Father Christmas by The Kinks because of its reflection on the socio-economic situation of its time and therefore its actual relevance. As Brothers’ EP title suggests, that is exactly the song he chose to start off with. But picking the right song is only half of the battle, the delivery should be just right. Otherwise that relevance could dissipate quickly. And while Brothers’ isn’t the second coming of Ray Davies he only slightly altered the arrangement to stay true to the spunky, raw nature of the original song and he manages to stay true to the core of the song.
O Holy Night and Christmas Tree are Christmas evergreens by now and there must be a million different interpretations of these songs. Cary Brothers took the tender route on these classics and while this is nothing too revolutionary his warm vocals and earnest interpretation makes the songs feel current.
I’ve never been someone to get too excited about Christmas records. “Father Christmas” by Cary Brothers is a nice little venture though. I must admit I’m a little biased as I’m drawn in by Cary’s vocals no matter what he sings. I still prefer his original work by a wide margin but it’s a nice little treat for the fans.
