Last year’s “All The Rage” was a breath of fresh air in singer-songwriter country. Earnest, versatile and impressive would be the keywords for Cary Brothers’ debut. Not even a year later, Brothers returns with another offering of excellent musicianship on “Waiting For Your Letter”.
The haunting Ride opens the EP with massive sound. It’s not loud or noisy but sonically it is rich and full. It masquerades the lyrics slightly but as you spin the song more often, those lyrics will come through anyway. Listening to the sonic outcry of the song it should come as no surprise that this song has become a fan favorite.
The title track, Waiting For Your Letter, is a perfect example of effective songwriting. In the verses, the pressure comes off but with almost Bowie-esque vocals, Cary Brothers intrigues anyway while the choruses are big and powerful with both vocals and instruments pushing forward. Restraint in the verses, sing-along potential in the chorus; it works.
After the power of the first two tracks it is time to pull on the heartstrings again. Loneliest Girl in the World is perfectly sad and beautiful. I can’t imagine there are girls who wouldn’t want Cary singing to them: “…you are the loneliest girl in the world and I just want to make it go away…” And you know what, I believe him. It’s one thing to sing it but Cary doesn’t just sing it, he delivers it.
Wasted One is another haunting song, which is something Brothers is eerily good at. His vocal style works well in these songs. In typical Cary Brothers fashion he slowly adds layers to the song and builds up towards a rich arrangement where his vocals match the growing intensity of the composition. When he starts belting out “…this is a course I can’t take, this is the reason why you’re not afraid, this is the force and the weight, we can justify a better way…” he has got you hooked.
Soulful, heartfelt vocals on top of an acoustic arrangement are a classic. And Cary Brothers can do classic. Everyone who’s ever had heartbreak and feels the pain, the memories, even the melancholy about it will instantly feel this song. It shows that some messages are universal and timeless. Just like this song.
Cary Brothers delivers. Again! “Waiting For Your Letter” is at the very least equal to “All The Rage” and provides another look into the quality and versatility of Brothers’ music. It is about time the world is going to start noticing Cary Brothers!
