Highway Ghosts is a band that’s been doing quite well in their own area, in and around Boston. And for a good reason. The high quality roots-rock that combines the americana and westcoast influences with a more modern and mainstream sound is something that needs to be heard. While mainstream radio is only slowly picking up on these bands, there is a vast audience for excellent music like this. I am most likely going to be a little biased because this genre of music is the genre I grew up with and is a genre I am still actively involved in. I will try to judge this band and the album on its merits though.
Highway Ghosts debuts with “After All This Time”. The album has a very good production and the overall sound is not only based on good quality of songwriting and performance but also just sounds very pleasant. You can easily imagine yourself driving down the interstate with this album blasting out of your car speakers. It would make the drive a whole lot more enjoyable.
The album can lean on very strong songwriting, both musically and lyrically. This combined with passionate, soothing vocals and excellent guitar & rhythm work, this band has everything it needs to become one of the top acts in their genre. Musically they are somewhere in the range of Bruce Springsteen, Rosemary’s Sons, the rootsier side of CCR, etc. And I might’ve said that radio isn’t picking up on this genre too much lately, but the songs on “After All This Time” have a lot of radio potential. Very catchy songs like Taken and How It Seems could actually do pretty well on radio if you ask me.
All in all, Highway Ghosts debut with an album that creates high expectations for a future follow-up and it should open up a lot of possibilities and opportunities for this band. If they are a household name in 5 years, I wouldn’t be surprised at all. Musically this band knows what it’s about and they know how to deliver the message and emotion through their music. Listen to songs like Taken, If You Were Mine, Words & How It Seems and you’ll probably be just as sold on this CD as I am.
