Right off the bat he gets you moving on Fall In Love which is incredibly infectious and has you singing along after only a single listen. The arrangement of effects, synths and fills is clever and aids the effectiveness of the song but lets be honest, it's the vocal strength that really drives this song. That's what pulls you over the line and makes the actual connection. Venti's vocals are one of the most likeable in modern pop music. I could listen to this all day long.
Little Runner could be considered the defacto single off his previous EP and it hasn't lost any of its strength. I'll probably be mumbling "little runner, little runner, little runner, I loved you" for the rest of the day (and likely the rest of the week). What I hadn't really picked up on before is that I can hear a slight Tears for Fears influence in this song. It's a little buried but once you hear it, you can't unhear it. I mean that as a positive comment though, because we all know TFF is one of the coolest bands of the 80s.
Venti's vocal strength is even more evident on Legacy which is sparser and more minimalistic in its initial build up. The slight Japanese influence in the electronic arrangement and the powerful, powerful vocals are instrumental to the growing intensity of the song which adds layer after layer and becomes fuller and fuller. There is always a chance that the style of music isn't quite your cup of tea but I don't think anyone can say this is a bad song or that Nicky Venus isn't an incredibly talented artist.
On Bodily Love, the Tears For Fears influences come to the surface again. Even in the vocals I can hear it now. It's groovy, new wave with a modern twist and while it doesn't have the same catchiness of the previous tracks it is an impressive closer to this EP.
"Fall in Love" picks up where Nicky Venus left off with "Little Runner". Infectious and incredibly smart electro-pop/new wave with one of the better vocals in modern pop music. But don't just take my word for it, head over to Nicky Venus' bandcamp page and get hooked yourself while I hit the repeat button.
