Wolf Parade returns with album numero three. The indierock band hailing from Canada is gloomier than ever on “Expo 86″ and channels some Modest Mouse, Interpol-like new wave/post-punk influences on this new release.
Upon first listen I wasn’t quite sure what to think about this album. On one hand I was very interested in what I had just heard but on the other hand maybe slightly turned off as well. But soon I realized this is an album that takes time to fully appreciate. And it really is an album for that matter. You shouldn’t listen to these songs seperately but to the album as a whole. After several listens you will find there is a certain build up, or cadence even, that leads you through the album.
The rollercoaster (in a good way!) of music leads you through groovy, pointy songs like What Did My Lover Say? and 80s new wave-ish songs like In The Direction of the Moon as well as the playful Pobody’s Nerfect. And the album comes to a brilliant and magnificent climax with the closer Cave-O-Sapien. On that song the band settles in a classic rock & roll groove and builds up the intensity until there is no more.
It may take a little while before you hear all there is to hear on this album and it may take even longer to really appreciate and understand what is going on, but “Expo 86″ is an album that I can only applaud. It’s not just a collection of 11 songs, it’s a pretty fine work of art.
