Former member of The Junes, Bertolf Lentink is one of the leading guitarists and songwriters in the Netherlands. Despite that, he’s not too well known yet. But with the release of “For Life” his name and reputation might start to get the appreciation he deserves.
With catchy, well-written guitarpop, Bertolf is one of those pop artists that stand out. There are so many decent singers and guitarists out there that can write a fine pop tune, but there are only a few who can write and perform popular music that is actually popular as well as bring something original to the table. Bertolf falls in that category.
I’m sure he’ll get compared to other artists and bands a lot, and yeah, in a general sound I understand. And I agree, some of the songs are a bit safer than others, but overall the songwriting is very sound and the songs sound great on the radio. Singles like For Life, Mr Light and lead single Another Day are perfect to get the radio’s attention. And if I may make one comparison, I would like to mention James Taylor. I’m not saying Bertolf’s music sounds like his but just like Taylor, when Bertolf sings a song, tells you a story, you believe him. It feels real. And that is the real strength of “For Life”. It doesn’t just sound nice, no it is believable, it’s convincing.
“For Life” may well be one of the more popular releases in 2009 in The Netherlands. With pop gems like For Life, Not Bringing Me Down and the excellent acoustic Broken Beyond Repair he shows strong songwriting capabilities and a that he is a sincere and convicing performer. “For Life” is a most excellent solo debut for Bertolf.
