Untyde is a band from LA, creating energetic power rock with an alternative twist. With limited resources they are able to create an energetic sound that earned them praise for their live shows. Now they released a self-titled EP so you can listen to the music at home too. Fall Down
This self-titled EP starts with a song called Fall Down, which has a catchy melody, with some cool hooks and gritty vocals that fit with the uptempo rock in the song. The steady bass and tight drums give the song the body it needs.
White Wash
The CD continues with White Wash which is an uptempo alt-rocker with plenty of energy. It might not be a strong as the first track, but the band shows they are a talented collective, very capable of writing and performing class act rock songs.
Green Mirror
Green Mirror is a good example of a clever rock song that has great interaction between the lyrics and the music. It’s not the most refreshing song on the album, but it’s a fairly strong alt-rocker that is performed with professionalism and conviction.
Shine
The crown jewel on this EP is Shine. This anthemic power ballad was featured in the movie “School of Life” and when you listen to the song, you’ll immediately understand why. The song is commercially appealing and musically it appeals to both AC pop fans and (alt.) rock fans with its recognizable sound.
Change
With a guitar intro that reminds me of a certain classic rock band, and a catchy rhythmic cadence, Change is another song that is decent on this EP. The song has a lot of potential for a live song. It has raw energy and good tempo, and is performed passionately.
Drinking Song
One of the better songs on this EP is Drinking Song which has a cool melody and sounds a little different from the rest of the songs. It shows some variety and creativity and it suits the band well. The vocals are crisp and the instruments are perfect. Good song to play during a sports game.
Don’t Make Sense
Don’t Make Sense sounds nice, and it’s an interesting change of pace, but this band is better when they unleash their energy. Towards the end of the song that energy tries to seep through, but it never comes to an explosion of energy which is what these guys do best.
Mystery
Mystery is a good song. It’s catchy and has nice tempo. The focus is on the vocals during the verses and during the chorus, the instruments come on the foreground slightly more. A good end to this interesting EP.
With this self-titled EP, Untyde shows they are a talented alternative rock band that are very capable of writing and performing great rock songs. The songs have a lot of live potential and several of them are quite catchy and clever and might not do too bad on radio. The band has a lot going for them, but they don’t necessarily stand out. The talent is there, but they need to come into their own more if they want to hit it big.
